We have our Statue of Liberty too !! It's located on the Swan island, in the 15th arrondissement. It was launched the 15th november 1889 by Auguste Bartholdi and it's turned towards New York.

During Paris-Plage, you can play volley-ball or beach-rugby on the square of the city hall, in the 1st arrondissement.

This sign is located in the corner of the Saint-Denis street & Cygne (= Swan) street in the 1st arrondissement. It's written : "Au Beau Cygne" (= Beautifull Swan's). I think it was the name of a shop wich doesn't exist nowadays. The mosaic is a little bit damaged but it doesn't seem to bother the pigeons who choose to nidificate behind.

Paris-Plage (the beach in Paris) is open since friday 20th. There is a beach open along the Seine banks with the sand, the games and the palm trees. This year, a a nautical base have been set at the Villette bowl, in the north of Paris. I'll post some more photos the next days.

This sculpture is in front of the St-Lazare railway station. This is the work of Arman, a french artist who died in 2005. This sculpture is called "L'Heure De Tous" ("Everybody's Hour" may be the translation). You can have more information about his work on his website.

Today, the Place du Chatelet. In the center of this public square, there is a foutain, La Fontaine du Palmier ("The Palm-Tree Fountain") and a column. This column was erected in 1808 to celebrate the victorys of Napoleon and the sculpture on the top represents the Victory, with the crowns of laurel in each hand. I took this photo while I was waiting for the opening of the cinema to see the movie about Joe Strummer. This is a documentary by Julian Temple ("The Filth & The Fury" about the Sex Pistols) about the life of Joe Strummer, leader of The Clash (the best band ever) and it's vey moving and thrilling. Friends, family talk about him around a camp fire, with some archives. If you're a Clash fan or if you love the rock'n roll, you have to see this documentary !!

I've found this little theatre in a passage. It's the "Theatre du Tambour Royal" ("The Royal Drum Theater"). This theatre exist since 1850 and Maurice Chevalier did his first show in 1902 on this scene.

"Green Fields" - The Good, The Bad & The Queen

This vegetable wall is on the front a parisian shop, the BHV. The name means "Bazar de l'Hotel de Ville" ("the Stores of the City Hall") because it's located in front of the City Hall. The one on the photo is a new, dedicated the the Mens. I've never been in this shop so don't ask me if it's interesting. The BHV is one of the three big store in Paris with the Galeries Lafayette and the Printemps ; they attract a lot of tourists during the year.

This fountain (the Innocents fountain) is located in the center of Paris, in the district of Chatelet-Les Halles. it's the work of two architects, Jean Goujon between 1546 and 1549 and Augustin Pajou in 1788. Augustin Pajou did the 4th part of the fountain following its installation in the center of the place. Nowadays it's a meeting-place when you want to see someone (but it's crowdy, mostly during the week-end !!).

Today, a parisian monument wich is ay Bastille place : the Genius of the Bastille and the bronze column.
This bronze column, known as the column of "July", have been raised in the center of the place between 1833 & 1840. It is 52 meters high, and has a 4 meters in diameters. It ends with a balcony surmounted of a genius which holds in a hand a broken chain and in the other a lit torch. (parisrama.fr)

The Genius represents "the Freedom which flies away by breaking his irons and by sowing the light". (parisrama.fr)
The Bastille place is also one of the important parisian point for the public demonstration, as the Republique place (a post about it next week).

This is a gluing. What is represented is called a Tiki. A tiki is a part of the old rock'n roll culture like the pin-ups, the cars.
It's represented by the "exotica" music (by Martin Denny for exemple) which is in fact the lounge music.

For a more historical and mythological point of view, let's read Wiki : "In Māori mythology, Tiki is the first man. In traditions from the East Coast of the North Island, the first human is a woman created by Tāne, god of forests. Usually her name is Hine-ahu-one. In other legends, Tāne makes the first man Tiki, then makes a wife for him.
In some West Coast versions, Tiki himself, as a son of Rangi and Papa, creates the first human by mixing his own blood with clay, and Tāne then makes the first woman. Sometimes Tūmatauenga, the war god, creates Tiki.
In another story the first woman is Mārikoriko. Tiki marries her and their daughter is Hine-kau-ataata.
In some traditions, Tiki is the penis of Tāne.
In fact, Tiki is strongly associated with the origin of the procreative act.
